Meditation and Why It Matters

Think about how many thoughts are running through your mind right now. How many are you able to identify? Is it just a few or too many to count? We all have a lot going on, so not important to dwell on this too much. The point here is if you have too many things in your mind, it can create tension, leading to stress, or mental overload, leading to being reactive, short, or unprepared. These are just some examples.

Meditation allows our mind to be still. Actually, from my experience, even small meditative sessions can improve cognition. Using breath and slowing down your mind, increasing the space between thoughts, and training your mind to be more focused and calm. It is a training exercise in mental emptiness, in the most productive way. I like to think of this as a series of dots in between thoughts, creating space for improved clarity. Think of this as a yoga class for your mind.

Stilling the mind also enables us to make space for creativity, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Imagine your mind is like a cyclone, bouncing back and forth, cycling around, creating lots of noise. You have less time for focused work and lose focus on what is important now. Meditation helps us sort through our thoughts and select the ones that are the most important in the present moment. Realistically, we cannot focus on many things at the same time, with the utmost precision. Remember, this is a journey, and we practice often. Cut yourself some slack if it takes some time to get there.

Meditation can take many forms, including moving meditations, mind visualizations, and guided sessions on YouTube or various apps. One of my favorites, a simple yet effective go-to, can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfKEAiwrgeY.
